Thai Sticky Rice

by Melissa on April 11, 2010

Sticky rice is a type of rice that is grown in Asia that becomes especially sticky when cooked. It is used in many Asian dishes including Chinese, Korean, Thai, Vietnamese and Japanese.

The main thing to note to make sure that you get sticky (glutinous) rice and not regular Thai rice. Glutinous rice is a short-grained rice that becomes especially sticky once its cooked. Despite its name, this type of rice does not contain a large amount of gluten, so it is likely safe for people on gluten-free diets.

When you go to your local Asian supermarket (Hmart, Farmers Market, Ranch99, etc), you will see a huge rice section with mounds and mounds of bags of rice. It’s actually kind of overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for. The rice that you will want to get is will be called Thai Sweet Rice. Turn the bag over and if you’re lucky, you’ll see the words “glutinous” or “sticky” in the cooking instructions. That will be the rice that you need to get!
